南北戦争中、アブラハム・リンカーン大統領(1809-1865年）がこの祈りを捧げました。＜リンカーンは、熱心に聖書を読み、神に祈る大統領として知られています。アメリカのお金に『In God we trust』（神に信頼する）とありますが、彼が大統領の頃からそれが刻まれました。また、感謝祭が彼の頃からはじまりました。彼は、敬虔なキリスト者でした。＞
『というのは、神の治める力に自ら頼り、謙った悲しみで自分の罪や過ちを告白するのは国々または人間の義務であります。しかし、真実な悔い改めは、慈愛と赦しに導く、と確実な希望を持つのです。また、聖書に告げられて、全ての歴史において証明されているように、神を主とする国のみが祝福される、この崇高な真実を認めなければなりません。神の律法によって分かりますが、国々は、個人のように、この世において、罰や懲らしめに服従させられますが、私たちの国を破壊している、この酷い南北戦争の苦難が、私たちの大胆な罪の罰であることを、正しく恐れなければならないのではないでしょうか。民全体として国が改革される必要とされているのではないでしょうか。私たちは、天の豊かな恵を受けています。平安と繁栄に長い間守られて来ました。他の何の国よりも、私たちは、数、富と力において成長して来ました。しかし、私たちは、神を忘れました。私たちを平和のうちに守り、繁栄させた、力ずけた、（神の）恵み深い手を忘れました。また、自分の崇高な知恵や道徳によって、この祝福を得た、と心の中で自分を欺いて、空しく考えています。自分の耐えない成功に酔って、私たちをあがない（救う）、守る神の恵を必要としない、過剰な自信を持ち、私たちを創った神に祈る必要がない傲慢さになっているのです。この失礼を受けた神に対して私たちは、自ら謙り、国の罪を告白し、寛容と赦しを祈る必要があるのです。』

＜元の英文＞" Whereas, it is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, and to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon, and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in Holy Scripture, and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord. And, insomuch (sic) as we know that by His divine law nations, like individuals, are subjected to punishments and chastisement in this world, may we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war which now desolates the land may be but a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole people? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which has preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. It behooves us, then, to humble ourselves before the offended power, to confess our national sins and to pray for clemency and forgiveness."
